Newcomers nuggets: Ten points to ponder for a bilingual caseload
Within most American schools and communities, there are English Learners. Drawing from practical experience at a NC public school established to serve new arrivals, the presenter will address “ten points to ponder” for improving service delivery for all ELs; from confronting obstacles to promoting unbiased assessment and holistic treatment practices.
Who are ELs, what can they do, and what should SLPs know?
We are currently living in an age of standards based educational reform, so school age practitioners must become intimately familiar with the standards that guide assessment and instruction in US public schools. This presentation highlights important aspects of English Language Development (ELD) standards and proposes ways that SLPs can utilize this knoweldge to serve school-aged ELs.
Linguistic War: Everett vs. Chomsky
The purpose of this paper is to define recursion and discover its potential as a language universal within two prevailing theories. The primary question of interest asks: Is recursion the fundamental “secret ingredient” that allows humans, and only humans, to develop and produce language?
Exploring research on ASD services: What must SLPs know?
There are many treatment options available to children and families affected by ASDs. However, not all approaches are empirically validated or provided equally. SLPs must become familiar with the numerous intervention choices that bombard families in order to advocate and provide the best services for children with ASDs.
Bridges
Bridges is another event on my wish list to attend. Many of its matriculants are highly influential women in higher education administration. Unaware of what my specific career path holds, I know this program would be an invaluable development and networking opportunity that I would be honored to one day experience.
A Conversation on Communication
This training session was delivered at a local library for mothers on the milestones of communication. The primary objectives were to help mothers recognize typical and atypical linguistic behaviors and discover ways to promote language development with their children.
